This workshop location is a journey back in time. Silver
City, nestled in the mountains of southwest
Idaho at 6,200 ft. elevation, is one of the most accurately
preserved “ghost
towns” in the United States. The area supported
a silver and gold mining boom in the 1800s and at the
peak,
Silver City had a population of around 2,500 with 75
businesses, 300 homes, and 12 ore processing plants.
Silver City was
also the County Seat and, in 1874, had the first telegraph
and daily newspaper in the Idaho Territory. In the
1890s, the city had electricity.
About 75 original structures, dating back to the 1860s,
still remain in Silver City, providing real insight and
experience into life in the area during the early history
of Idaho and the west. The Idaho Hotel, originally built
in 1863 in Ruby City, a mile away, was moved to Silver
City in 1866 after Ruby City lost the County Seat to Silver
City. The hotel was closed in 1942, but reopened in 1972.
The hotel is preserved as much as it was during its prime.
During this workshop, Mike will cover topics such as composition,
exploring your subject, understanding vision and perception,
off-camera flash, and filter use. Digital and film photographers
and all skill levels welcome.
Accommodations and meals are available at the Idaho Hotel,
or a camping option can be selected. Camping is available
free at a primitive BLM campground in town or at various
locations in the area (no potable water) on a first-come,
first served basis.
Driving directions and map, release form, and other materials
will be sent to you when you register.
